The Rio Chicamocha at Sunrise.
Learn to kayak in Colombia! Colombia’s warm weather and warm water make it the perfect place to learn to kayak. The “Rio Chicamocha Multi-Day Kayak Course” is a 7 day kayak course designed for beginning kayakers. An emphasis will be placed upon multi-day expedition kayaking and wilderness ethics. The first three days will be in San Gil, the adventure sports capital of Colombia. The time will be divided between swimming pool sessions, river sessions on the Rio Fonce and classroom time studying river safety, rescue principals and wilderness ethics. After a three day crash course we will graduate to the Rio Chicamocha. The Rio Chicamocha is a big volume class III-IV river that winds through a deep desert canyon. The numerous class II-III rapids are the perfect place to learn to kayak and the most difficult rapids can easily be portaged. The Rio Chicamocha has many big sandy beaches with spectacular views of the canyon walls. During the four day descent of the Rio Chicamocha we will not only develop kayak skills, but also learn multi-day expedition camping techniques specific to kayaking. The Rio Chicamocha is a remote and pristine canyon and is the perfect classroom to study wilderness ethics specific to camping along rivers. The Rio Chicamocha is a long and committing river and interested individuals should be physically fit and posses an adventure’s spirit. Students will be accompanied by at least two instructors and a safety kayaker. We will add more instructors and or safety kayakers as needed to ensure we have at least a 1:2 instructor/student ratio.
Please send an email to RSVP. We will request a deposit 90 days before the trip and full payment prior to the trip.
